Mundane Sector - New York City

New York City is a powerful symbol, a microcosm of everything about the modern Mundane world, in a way that spans through most of the planes throughout the sector. That isn't entirely a good thing, unfortunately. Different planar incarnations of New York City vary in their general environment, but two themes run through the area. One is a deep variety and sense of opportunity, with massive business highrises and people from all over the world roaming the streets, in something like a great melting pot. Another is the ultimate consequences of placing so many people in such small quarters: New York City is far from the safest city in the sector, and especially in the crowded subways and other areas, you'd best keep your eyes on your valuables. Still, with the bustling information explosion of Times Square, and the Statue of Liberty still looming on the horizon in the absence of the Twin Towers, the city's certainly a sight to see.

Ah, New York, New York. The highest-populated city in the United States by a margin of several million. Home to the UN and the NY Stock Exchange. Home to the Statue of Liberty. The Big Apple, the City That Never Sleeps...

All of these miscellaneous facts are totally lost on one Naruto Uzumaki, who is currently plodding down the street looking totally lost. "Geez, I heard this village was big, but I wasn't expecting this! I bet you could fit a thousand Hidden Leafs in here!" Well, lost or not, Granny Tsunade wanted him to "broaden his horizons", so that's what he's going to do. He turns to a random passerby. "Hey, hey, d'you know a place here that makes good ramen?"

The passerby gives this jumpsuit-clad ninja a disbelieving stare, then shuns him and walks on. "Tch, fine, whatever. I'll find it myself, then!"

Normally, while traveling in Mundane places, Dizzy is a bit more careful to keep her unusual body parts concealed. Even in a number of non-mundane places as well--it's best not to draw attention to herself that way.

But...this is New York City, where people will care more if you don't hit the gas at the very nanosecond that the light turns green, as opposed to having extra limbs in the form of wings and a tail. That'll barely get you a second look. And so she just troops through the streets of Manhattan, mostly ignored.

Fortunately, she is well-tuned to the plight of a lost traveller--particularly one who appears to be from another world. She passes by Naruto, slows in her pace, and then turns to join in. "Are you lost, young man?" she asks him, easily keeping pace.

Cammy is surprisingly at home in this city. Why? Who the hell really knows. But this city almost feels familiar. Like she's been here before. Manhattan Island is one of those places where you either act like you fit in, or you stick out like a sore thumb. Despite her attire, nobody gives the blonde street fighter a second glance because she just plain doesn't seem to be out of place somehow.

At about this time, Cammy has found her way into the general area where Naruto and Dizzy are to be found. Munching on a hot dog at the moment in fact. Seems even she succumbs to hunger. Upon spotting the two other multiversal people (Naruto and Dizzy looking astoundingly out of place in the mundan e sector is a big hint that these guys aren't from this Earth any more than she is), she heads towards them.

"Greetings." she says in her usual near emotionless monotone. "What brings you two to New York?"

Of course, Kelvena does her best to retain a low-profile. While she's able to defend herself from most potential threats she still looks like an easy target for any criminals. Especially since she walks around with her eyes closed. Of course she's still aware of most of what goes around her.

The girl has come to take in the local culture and gather information. There's certainly plenty going on the city. Hearing a familar voice she turns and makes her way towards it noting two other sets of footsteps. "Hello again, Dizzy."

"Hm?" It takes Naruto a moment to realize that Dizzy's speaking to him. He stops and turns toward her curiously. "Eheh, yeah, I guess so. I'm just looking for -- whoa, are those real? Cool!" Zero to distracted in three seconds, ladies and gentlemen. Of course he's referring to the young Gear's wings, craning his head around shamelessly to get a better look at them. "Is it some kinda bloodline limit? Most of the time they're weird looking, but those are pretty!"

Before long, two newcomers join them. Naruto glances up at Cammy -- finding her outfit rather less unusual than those of many of the natives. In response to her question, he replies cheerfully, "Oh, just looking around! I've only been outta the Gates a week, after all!" He also notices Kelvena's approach, but since she's not talking to him, he doesn't address her yet.

A moment's hesitations; Dizzy looks over at Cammy, blinking for a moment. Then she says, "Oh, hello...I'm just here doing some things for the Relief Society." Hmm, another offworlder, probably? She offers a friendly smile, at least. Of course, that is when Kelvena now walks up. "Oh, hello, Miss Kelvena," she say to the other woman. "What a coincidence to find you here too!"

But now, back to Naruto! She looks at him questioningly, then blushes a little bit as he suddenly appears quite entranced by her wings. "Um...yes, they're real," she says, giggling a little nervously. "Bloodline? I...I'm not sure what you mean by that."

And then she smiles, slightly knowingly. "Ohh, you're new to the Gates? It's a little confusing at first, isn't it?" She suddenly curtseys lightly. "My name is Dizzy! I've been around to a number of places, so if you need help finding your way around, please do ask!"

Cammy nods to Dizzy. "I am currently not on assignemtn, so I'm simply looking around the city trying to find information." she says. Though she doesn't say what information she's looking for. Then she turns to Naruto.

"Welcome to New York then. This is part of what is called the Mundane Sector of the Multiverse. I currently answer to the designation Cammy White. What is your designation?" she sasks. Then turns to Kelvana and nods, figuring that the obvious question- being that which she just asked Naruto, isn't really needed since Dizzy and Kelvana have technically introduced each other to her, while Naruto has yet to do so

"Kelvena will be fine, you don't work for me or anything." She smiles a bit at that, Dizzy isn't a subordinate of hers or anything. She does like the girl's politness though. "Bloodline? She doesn't know what Naurto is referring to seeing how she can't see Dizzy.

"Oh yes, it's nice to meet you Cammy. Do you work in intel as well?" She bows to the woman. She's assuming she's at least fairly familar with the city and could be helpful.

"Really?" Naruto asks Dizzy. "Huh, you're not the first person who didn't know that phrase. Uh, a bloodline limit is... mmn, well, I don't really understand it myself, but it's when ninja clans have special powers nobody else does, and then they pass them along to their kids! Like special eyes or being able to use your bones as weapons." He laughs and nods at her other question. "Yeah, it sure is! Until I was 12, I never left the Fire Country where I grew up, so it's been seriously amazing seeing all these huge new places!"

Naruto's eyes glaze over a little when Cammy goes into detail about their location. He blinks at the question, and then, "Uh... Oh, right! Yeah. I'm Naruto Uzumaki, from the Hidden Leaf Village! Nice to meet you all!" He nods to everyone after Dizzy's curtsey, looking awkward and completely unused to this 'politeness' stuff.

It occurs to the ninja, belatedly, that he is currently chatting with three pretty young women. He can practically hear Jiraiya cheering him on. He just snorts and ignores the pervy sage.

"Hello, Miss White," Dizzy now says to Cammy, also with the curtsey. "And, um...all right, Kelvena." At least it's becoming easier for her to drop the titles with those who are just acquaintances and not quite friends, these days. She listens quietly to their conversation for a moment. 'Intel'? Hmmm.

Ninja clans...she knows a little bit about those. "Special powers? Born with...hm. Well, I've never heard of it called that, but--I was born with these, yes." She reaches over a shoulder to stroke the blue-white wing lightly with her fingers. There is a sense of...calm and peace from that wing. The green one, however, not so much. The opposite, really. But, fortunately, it is only a muted kind of menace.

"Oh, pleased to meet you too, Mister Uzumaki." She smiles at him kindly. "I...I think I've heard of Hidden Leaf Village, but I've never been there myself. So, you're just exploring, huh? There's a lot to see. I've been running around for...two years now, and there's still more to explore!"

"I do not work in intelligence." Cammy answers simply. "I am a member of the IPA, and am primarily a combatant. My skillset is primarily battle driven, despite a lack of a past." she says, and then turns to Naruto and Dizzy.

"I would recommend learning the subway system here. Although it is possible to walk to a majority of destinations here in the city, the Subway makes travel much easier."

"Well, given it's name, I doubt many people have been there." Kelvena doubts the word "Hidden" would be in it's name if it were widely visited. She can hear the ruffling of Dizzy's wings. "Wings? That's what he was refering to. I'm sure they're quite lovely.

Yeah, there seems to be a ton of locations connect to gates. The subway huh? That sounds convinent." She'll likely will be have second thoughts about it after her first ride.

The emotions emanating from Dizzy's wings are -- like many things -- lost on Naruto. A ninja he may be, but sensitive he is usually not. He just says, "That's cool. Did your parents have them too?" At her choice of address, he waves a hand dismissively: "Nah, nah, just Naruto's fine! Nobody ever calls me by my last name, I won't know you're talking to me!"

Naruto chuckles as the topic moves to Hidden Leaf. "Well, we're not as hidden as some of the other ninja villages, actually. But it's a great place. You guys should come visit some time!" After he's explored this city some more, that is! "Subway? Hmm..." Naruto tries to imagine what a subway is/looks like. He's not having much luck.

Dizzy nods in assent. "The public transportation here is very convenient. But confusing. You have to be careful, or you could get lost." She reaches into a pocket, frowning a moment, and digs around, before withdrawing a slightly wrinkled map. "You can get one of these from any of the booths, at least.

Again, she blushes lightly at the comments directed toward her wings. Undine mentally just laughs, Necro continues to bristle. "Oh, okay, Mister Naru...oh, you'd prefer just 'Naruto', wouldn't you?" She peers at him a moment. Even she can catch onto that relatively quickly. "Well! Maybe I'll try to come and visit something. For now...." She gestures over toward a set of stairs that goes down into the sidewalk, nearby. "We can show you a subway, if you'd like!"

"Correct, Designate Naruto. The subway is the local underground train system for this city, though it does have a number of overpasses as well." Cammy says. Then nods to Dizzy. "It is a simple matter to show you what it is and how it works." she says with something resembling a half grin. She's not really emoting, but she's starting to learn how to apply expression, a sign that the mental controls on her mind are ever so slowly crumbling.

"Just be aware, that at first it may feel awkward. Not everyone is used to trains that travel below ground or bwteen the space of one building to the next."

"Sure, might as well since we're here. I've rode in some pretty fast vehicles, I don't think it'll bother me." She remembers the time she went for a ride in Skyghene with Tolone. She can't see Dizzy's gesture so she waits for someone else to lead the way into the subway.

<Citizen's Band> Naruto Uzumaki fiddles with his radio. "...y'know, I coulda sworn I recognized one of those osu's."

<Citizen's Band> Kamina says, "Heh. Call me Lord Kamina!"

"What's a 'designate'?" Naruto mutters under his breath, trading one confusion for another. Trains that travel underground? Now he just needs to find out what a train is. But it makes a bit more sense. He leans over to squint at Dizzy's map, boggling at the maze of lines and colors and dots. "Geez, sure looks confusing. How do people find what they're looking for in a village this huge? But yeah, I'd like to check it out!" He'll follow wherever Dizzy and Cammy lead, trusting little doofus that he is.

Hmm, that may be true. "Well, just...hold on, and I'm sure you'll be fine," Dizzy says, slightly uncertainly. Ninjas don't get motion sickness, do they? She quietly hands off the map to the young man--it'll be little trouble to get another one anyway; he may want to study it for a while--and then nods. "Well, then, let's go, shall we?"

And thus, with a quick beckoning motion, she begins to lead the small group over toward the stairs, weaving in and out of the crowd of people that are headed in every possible direction. But she's careful not to lose the others. "Try to stay close! It gets very busy here."

Cammy grins. This time it seems genuine. "This is not a village, designate Naruto. This is a city. There are roughly eight million people or so in this particular city. There are others across the United Statyes of various sizes and populations. However New York is considered to be the major hub of activity both domestic and international in this particular world. This tends to hold true for New York in most realities which play host to any version of it in what would be considered'modern' times." Cammy explains, following Dizzy. Navigating the sidewalks is easy. She waves in and out of the crowd of people about them with the grace of a trained fighter- which, appropriately enough, she is- and lightly brushes against Kelvana as she goes, to give the girl with the closed eyes some idea of which way they're going. Cammy isn't sure if Kel is blind or just has extremely sensitive eyes and requires sunglasses to see on a bright day such as this.

Kelvena nods and smiles at Cammy thankfully for the gesture as she remains closer to her. It would be almost impossible to keep track of their footsteps in such a large crowd. "It must be impossible to know where you're going if you're not closely familar with the area." Solaris doesn't certainly have anywhere near that many people.

You had him, Cammy, then you lost him. Naruto blinks at her in quiet incomprehension. He managed to get "eight million people" out of that, but such a huge number of people... It's hard to even imagine it! "Uh, gotcha," he lies, following along behind Dizzy. He has a bit more trouble keeping out of people's way than the others, but he manages it alright. "Down those stairs, then?"

Dizzy looks at ease right now, navigating through the hordes. "I used to stay away from large concentrations of people," she says, in a slightly softer voice. "But that was before I came through the Gates. I mean...it took a while for me to get used to it, but--for the most part, I've gotten more comfortable around more people." And besides, in a place like this, it is very easy to pass unnoticed in even a giant crush of humanity.

She stops a moment at the top, resting a hand on the rail, and nods to Naruto. "Down the rabbithole!" she says, cheerfully, not realizing that Naruto likely won't get the reference. "And then...oh, do you have some money? American dollars...there's a fee for riding the subway. If not, I've got a little bit on me, so...." And then she begins to descend, still making sure the others are following close behind.

Cammy actually giggles at Naruto's blatantly obvious lie when he says he understands.

"Simply put designate Naruto," she tries to explain, "New York City is part of a much larger country called the United States of America. There are millions of people living across the country, some in cities similar to this, and some in smaller cities, towns, and villages." She turns to Dizzy as the group descends. "I have enough to cover the four of us several times over, I believe. I spend little of my pay from the IPA on anything beyond the essentials. As such I have a large amount stored in the bank." She also makes sure Kelvana is still following and offers a steadying hand to help her with the stairs if she needs it.

Kelvena's still close to Cammy and takes her hand looking a bit embarrassed by this though. The girl doesn't like to rely on others this much, but she's not familar with this place and all the noise doesn't make it easier to pay attention.

"I converted some of my money as well." She's learned from the mistake of the last trip she took. "Why do you have so much money stored away if you don't mind me asking, it makes sense to save some sure but it doesn't hurt to have fun once in a while too." Sure, she usually takes things seriously, but even she doesn't force herself to all the time.

"Okay... So it's like Hidden Leaf and the Fire Country." Only way, way bigger, Naruto thinks in awe. The sheer scale of the worlds outside Hidden Leaf is going to take a lot of getting used to.

At the mention of money... Naruto freezes in place. "Uh..." Hurriedly he reaches into a pocket and pulls out his... Well. It's a coin pouch shaped like a big, fat frog. He pops its mouth open and looks inside at the pile of coins and small bills. "Errr... Crud. All I've got with me is ryou from home..." He looks supremely embarrassed at the idea of having to borrow money.

Hmm, well then. "Oh, I'll pay for myself at least," Dizzy says. "I have a job too--it's precisely for things like this." Probably not nearly as much as Cammy, but it's enough! Once again, she digs around in a pocket of her dress and pulls out a small wallet--functional but pretty, with flowers embroidered into it.

She pulls out a few green bills out and smiles at Naruto. "It's all right! Between the rest of us, we've got you covered." She leans a little closer to him to says, "If you really insist, you can pay us back later, but just for now--okay?" Because she understands a person's pride well enough, after all this time.

The ticket machines loom large up ahead. "So, is there any particular place you want to go to, Naruto?" Like, oh...Chinatown, with its tasty tasty la mien?

"I suppose if that's the best analogy that fits for you, then it works." Cammy replies. Then turns to Kelvana. "I do not....really understand the point of 'fun' as most people consider it." the blonde admits. "I am a fighter, and as such most of my expenditure, aside from essentials such as food, go into armaments. I don't make many purchases in either beyond what I need. As such, I have a decent amount saved up." Then she nods towards Naruto, indicating that she agrees with Dizzy's comments about repaying them for any expenditures they cover. She's also interested in seeing where Naruto chooses to go.

"I can understand where you're coming from. I generally have to be the responsible one in my group. That's why I have to make sure I enjoy any free time that I get. I'm surprised araments aren't covered by your job though. She removes her own wallet which simple-looking besides the Elements logo on it and removes a few dollars as well. Kelvena's curious about where Naruto wants to go as well.

Naruto turns red for a moment, but just nods to Dizzy. "Y-Yeah, thanks." Now that he's a ninja and can earn money on missions, he hates to owe anyone anything.

Now, where to go? Ahaha, everyone's looking to him, and he's not really sure. He'd come into the city just intending to see whatever he could see -- not such a good idea given the size, but how was he to know about that? He grabs a nearby brochure and flips through it at random. Chinatown, Manhattan... blah blah blah historical significance, yak yak "...the more than 200 Chinese restaurants in the area..."

Naruto's finger immediately stabs that page. "Let's go here!" he proclaims.

A small smile and nod to Naruto. All right, that'll do. Dizzy accepts the thanks quietly, and then-- "Hmm, Chinatown? Oh, wow, Miss Kuradoberi's from China--maybe they'll have good food like hers there! Okay, let's go, then."

And so, the half-Gear girl goes and goes through the process of buying tickets--one for herself, one for Naruto, and waits for the other two ladies to do the same, while mentally planning the various lines they'll have to hop onto and change stations at...this shouldn't be too bad. Right?

Cammy pays for herself and Kelvana, just to be nice, and guides the other girl with her through the turnstyle.

"I have always been confused as to why the asian district of New York is considered to be 'Chinatown', while the Los Angeles area has both a Chinatown and another area designated as 'Little Tokyo'." The blonde admits, also wondering how it is she KNOWS that.

"Perhaps there simply aren't enough Japanese and Japanese-American people living in the city for it to matter here?"

"Well, I'm not familar with this area, so I'll assume that to be the case." Kelvena nods in agreement with Cammy as she remains closer to her. "Sorry to be such a hassle."
