Author's Notes

Warning: the author's notes below contain spoilers for the story.

This was supposed to be a short story. It turned into an approximately 5000-word story. Somehow it spiraled out of my conscious control, as my projects tend to do, and ended up sparking ideas for several continuations as well. Here's the paragraph that originally inspired this story, written by GilyAnn in the HMS Orange Crush thread #XIV:

In another place someone raised an interesting issue. Now that Ginny is going to play in the Quidditch team. How do you think Harry or Ron is going to react to Malfoy manhandling Ginny. Ron seemes unaffected by her being able to play Quidditch. But does anybody think it would be interesting if Malfoy suddenly throws a bludger at Ginny or tries something funny with her? It would be hilarous to see if Harry suddenly feels enraged by Malfoy trying to hit Ginny or insult her. It would be sooo funny."

And I agreed. Much use was made of the Harry Potter Lexicon as reference for the rules of Quidditch and the years of characters "real" and imagined. Any mistakes are my own contribution. I'd also like to thank Audra Lachesis, Lady Aphrodite, and BeccaFran for beta-reading the first draft of the story and improving it immeasurably.

Some notes:

• After the events of Order of the Phoenix, it occurs to me that Harry may never want to use any broomstick but his Firebolt, no matter how many improved models come out.
• Harry's "worthless redheads" comment is sort of a reference (call it an homage) to Art Mulder's Crown of Splendor and Crown of Splendor 2.
• When Harry asked Ron that question in the hospital wing, I originally intended for Ron to mention feeling that way about Hermione. The idea was for Harry to think, "Hm, Ron feels protective of Hermione, and I feel protective of Ginny" and then connect the dots. Instead, Ron decided that he wanted to be serious and sensitive and came up with that line out of nowhere. I actually tried, but I just couldn't make him say anything else. My characters always try to do their own thing when I write. I just had to trust him.
• I don't think Katie graduates until after Harry's sixth year. In OotP, Ginny comments that "Angelina and Alicia are both leaving next year."
